Tips and Advice on Teaching Child and toddler Self Control
Children aren't born with Self Control-they learn it.  We have to help teach
them ways to handle self control and let them practice it.  Just like everything
your child has learned, they need to learn Self Control through lots of practice
and patience on your part.  If you follow some of these tips and advice, you
can teach your child not only self control, but also it will improve his behavior
and his ability to get along with others.
Developing Control
Part of having Self Control is to be able to express your feelings in an
acceptable manner.  Try creating a Feeling Chart.  Draw several
faces and label each one with an emotion.....
Sad
Happy
Scared
Angry
Ask your child how he/she is feeling from time to time and let them
point to the face that they feel.  Also help him read aloud how he
feels.  Let them take this opportunity to recognize words as well.

Show Control
Show your child self control in action by using everyday activities an
opportunity.
Example:  Do you get frustrated with drivers who cut you off?  Instead
of reacting angrily,  say something like, "That is a dangerous way to
drive, isn't it?"

Reward Control
Do you want to motivate your child to practice self control??  Give him
incentives!  For example, if he gets mad when you ask him to go to
bed every night,  give him stickers or other small treats.  Let him know
that each time he throws a tantrum, he has to give one of them back
to you.  Remind him the fewer goodies he has to give you, the less he
gets to keep.  Let him know if he keeps them all for one week, he will
get a reward.
